Additional information

Part of Canada's fourteen-coin Olympic series issued ahead of the 1988 Calgary Winter Games, this was among the first winter sports commemorative programs undertaken by the Royal Canadian Mint at this scale. Calgary's bid had beaten out Falun, Sweden and Cortina d'Ampeille in 1981, and the mint began issuing coins in pairs two full years before the torch was lit — an unusually long lead time driven by the need to fund Games infrastructure through collector sales.
