The CF-105 Arrow was cancelled by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker on February 20, 1959 — a date still referred to in Canadian aviation circles simply as "Black Friday." All completed airframes, jigs, tooling, and technical drawings were ordered destroyed, a decision whose rationale remains disputed: cost overruns, American pressure through NORAD, and the Eisenhower administration's promotion of the BOMARC missile program all played documented roles.

The destruction of the physical record means no complete Arrow survives. This coin was issued nearly four decades after cancellation, at a moment when the program had fully passed into nationalist mythology.
