Additional information

The "Canadian Passages" series was designed to document infrastructure that physically unified the country, and the railway earns its place without argument. The Canadian Pacific Railway's completion in 1885 fulfilled a confederation condition British Columbia had demanded in 1871 — without it, BC's entry into Canada collapses as a negotiated premise. The federal government nearly fell over the financing; the Pacific Scandal of 1873 brought down Macdonald's government entirely over CPR contract bribes.

The .9999 fineness is characteristic of Royal Canadian Mint bullion-adjacent collector issues from this period, where purity became a selling point distinct from traditional .925 commemorative silver.
