The Prairie Schooner — the canvas-topped wagon that carried tens of thousands of settlers across the Canadian prairies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries — took its nickname from the way its white cover billowed above the grassland like a sail on open water. The mass movement it symbolized was directly triggered by Clifford Sifton's aggressive immigration campaign beginning in 1896, which specifically targeted Eastern Europeans and Americans rather than the British settlers previous governments had preferred.
