Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA
(Translation: Elizabeth II Queen by the grace of God)
Reverse description The reverse presents a dramatic, naturalistically rendered scene of a humpback whale breaching the ocean surface, depicted in vivid selective colorization in deep blue and turquoise tones contrasting against the otherwise uncolored matte silver field. Water cascades dynamically from the whale's body as it rises from the sea, with ocean waves and coastal scenery, including a lighthouse visible on the distant horizon, rendered in fine relief. The date 2017 appears to the left of the central design, with the engraver's initials 'mb' inscribed to the lower right. The legend 20 DOLLARS CANADA is inscribed along the lower rim in bold relief lettering. The overall composition conveys a striking sense of motion and depth characteristic of the Royal Canadian Mint's wildlife series.
