Tuvalu's 1994 wildlife series drew on the nation's geographical reality — nine low-lying coral atolls in the central Pacific — rather than borrowed imperial iconography. The blue coral issues were part of a broader push by Pacific island microstates in the early 1990s to generate revenue through collector coinage, a practice that became so commercially aggressive across the region that many series were struck in quantities far exceeding genuine numismatic demand. This particular piece was produced by the Perth Mint under contract.
