The Battle of the Saints in April 1782 was a decisive British naval victory over the French fleet under Admiral de Grasse in the waters between Dominica and Guadeloupe — a engagement that effectively ended French ambitions in the Caribbean and secured British dominance of the West Indies for the remainder of the colonial period. This coin was issued in 1982, the bicentennial year of that battle, shortly after Saint Kitts and Nevis achieved associated statehood status ahead of full independence in 1983.
