The Amber Valley settlement in Alberta was established in 1910 by Black homesteaders, many from Oklahoma fleeing post-Reconstruction racial violence and discriminatory land laws. The Canadian government, despite actively recruiting American settlers, simultaneously worked to discourage Black immigration through bureaucratic obstruction and spurious medical rejections at the border. That the community survived and persisted for generations is the kind of history the RCM has increasingly drawn on for its commemorative program — a program that by 2024 was issuing well over a hundred silver collector pieces annually.
