Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's 1985–1988 Calgary Winter Olympics commemorative program, this issue was one of ten silver dollars released across four years ahead of the XV Olympic Winter Games. The series was deliberately paced — two coins per year — to sustain collector demand without flooding the market at once. Each design was contracted to a rotating pool of Canadian artists, a deliberate nationalistic procurement policy that kept the program distinctly domestic in character.
