Australia's Federation centenary in 2001 generated an extraordinary volume of commemorative issues, but this bimetallic piece from the Perth Mint was among the technically ambitious — gold-in-silver bimetallics of this specification required precision tooling to seat the dissimilar metals without gap or separation, a persistent production challenge the Perth Mint had been refining since its earlier bimetallic experiments of the 1990s. The floral emblem theme drew from each state and territory's official flower, a concept with no pre-Federation precedent since those designations were themselves a post-colonial administrative development.
