Additional information

The Gold Maple Leaf program launched in 1979 as a direct challenge to the South African Krugerrand, which at the time held a near-monopoly on the global bullion coin market. Canada's entry was notably purer — .999 fine at introduction, later refined to .9999 — and it forced competitors including the United States and Australia to develop their own bullion programs within the decade. This silver commemorative marks forty years of that competitive pressure reshaping the modern bullion industry.
