Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II, engraved by Arnold Machin, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. This is the second effigy of the Queen as used on Commonwealth coinage from the late 1960s onward. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left periphery, while FIJI and the date 1978 appear along the right, all in raised Latin characters.

Reverse description A large manta ray (Manta birostris) dominates the upper field, depicted in fine detail with its distinctive wing-like pectoral fins and cephalic lobes rendered in relief, evoking the marine conservation theme of the WWF series. In the lower right, a stylized hawksbill sea turtle rests amid coral or sea vegetation beside a rising sun motif. The denomination $20 appears in large numerals across the lower field, serving as the primary legend on this conservation commemorative issue.
