| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II, engraved by Arnold Machin, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. This is the second effigy of the Queen as used on Commonwealth coinage from the late 1960s onward. Fiji's 1978 conservation series was issued under the umbrella of a WWF-backed program that prompted several Pacific and Caribbean nations to mint silver commemoratives highlighting endangered local species. The initiative was as much a fundraising mechanism as a numismatic one — a portion of proceeds was directed toward conservation efforts, which was still a novel arrangement for government mints at the time.
