Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981, and its early commemorative program was largely driven by external minting contracts and international collector markets rather than domestic demand. This cycling issue was part of a broader wave of Los Angeles Olympic commemoratives produced by small nations in 1984, many of which had negligible athletic delegations at the Games — Belize sent fewer than ten competitors total.
