| Aanvullende informatie |
Clark, Gruber and Co. was a private Denver banking and assay firm that began striking gold coins in 1860 because the nearest federal mint was in New Orleans — effectively unreachable for Rocky Mountain miners needing to convert placer gold into spendable currency. The 1861 $20 piece used local Colorado gold, which accounts for the slightly debased fineness relative to the federal standard of .900. Congress authorized a Denver branch mint that same year, and the federal government purchased the Clark, Gruber operation outright in 1863, ending private coinage there entirely.
