Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Republic of Palau occupies the central field, depicting a sea god holding a trident flanked by a mermaid, set within an ornate shield with floral embellishments; above the shield, a traditional Palauan canoe with a figure is rendered in high relief. The legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs along the upper periphery, flanked on each side by a row of five-pointed stars. The series title RAINBOW'S END appears within the base of the shield, and the denomination 20 $ is inscribed in large numerals at the bottom of the field.

Reverse description A dramatic, high-relief depiction of Charon, the ferryman of the dead from Greek mythology, dominates the field; the cloaked, skeletal figure is shown from behind, wielding a long pole while seated in his boat on the River Styx, with skeletal hands of the dead reaching up from the water below. In the background, ruined classical temples and a colossal skull-shaped rock formation loom beneath a brooding sky filled with circling birds, while groups of shrouded souls await passage on the far shore. A red-colored lantern hanging from a pole at the bow adds a striking chromatic accent to the otherwise antiqued silver composition. The date 2023 is inscribed on a banner affixed to the prow of the vessel at the right.

Additional information

Palau has operated as a prolific novelty mint for the international collector market since the 1990s, issuing coins under licensing arrangements that bear no relation to domestic circulation. The "Charon" release belongs to a category of modern numismatic product — high-relief, themed silver — designed entirely for the bullion-collector crossover market rather than any monetary function.

KM#1006 is one of dozens of Palauan issues struck in a given year by European contract mints, most commonly in Austria or Poland.
