The American Goldfinch holds official bird status in three U.S. states — New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington — but its appearance on a Canadian crown-sized silver issue reflects the species' year-round presence across much of southern Canada, where it's a familiar feeder bird rather than a curiosity. The Royal Canadian Mint's selective colour application on .9999 fine silver has been a recurring technique since the early 2000s, applied here via a surface printing process rather than enamel inlay.
