Barbados has issued paper currency continuously since the Central Bank's establishment in 1972, and De La Rue has held the printing contract for virtually the entire run. This 2012 twenty-dollar note belongs to a long-lived series design that survived with only incremental security updates across multiple decades — unusually conservative for a Caribbean issuer during a period when neighbours were aggressively modernizing their note programs.

The see-through register, a relatively modest feature by 2012 standards, reflects the denomination's position in the series: significant enough to warrant protection, but not the flagship note driving the security specification.
