Kiribati — a nation of low-lying Pacific atolls whose highest point barely clears sea level — issued this coin as part of the wave of Olympic licensing agreements that flooded the commemorative market in the early 1990s. The Barcelona Games generated an extraordinary volume of such issues from small island nations with no Olympic team presence, minted almost exclusively for collector sales rather than domestic circulation.
Kiribati did not send sailors to Barcelona.
