Liberia's 1964 gold coinage was produced during the administration of William V.S. Tubman, whose 27-year presidency oversaw a period of significant foreign investment — particularly from Firestone and American steel interests — that generated the revenue underwriting such issues. These coins were struck by the Valcambi mint in Switzerland rather than any domestic facility, as Liberia has never operated its own mint.
The .999 fineness is unusually high for a circulating-format gold issue of the period, suggesting these were intended from the outset as bullion or presentation pieces rather than everyday commerce.
