Obverse description The obverse is printed in black and green intaglio on white paper, with a large guilloche underprint bearing a prominent 'XX' pattern at left and right. Two oval portrait vignettes are set at either side: a younger male figure faces right at left, and an elder statesman-type figure faces left at right. The central panel carries the bank title 'the Bank of Montreal' in ornate script, with the denomination 'Twenty Dollars' and the notation 'WILL PAY TO BEARER ON DEMAND', dated MONTREAL, JAN. 2nd, 1931, with two manuscript signatures below for the General Manager and President.
