The central vignette presents two allegorical female figures — one seated with a book and torch, the other resting her arm on a terrestrial globe — framed by ornate scroll-work. | Beschrijving keerzijde | Printed entirely in blue, the reverse is dominated by a central vignette of the Barclays Bank (Canada) head office building in Montreal, rendered in fine intaglio engraving and set within an ornate cartouche. Large guilloche rosettes bearing the numeral "20" occupy the left and right panels, while repeating "20" micro-numerals form the upper border. The foot of the note carries the inscription "20 TWENTY DOLLARS 20" and the printer's imprint along the lower margin. |

Barclays Bank (Canada) was a short-lived subsidiary of Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas), established to compete in the Canadian chartered banking market. The venture never gained meaningful traction, and the bank surrendered its charter in 1933 — just four years after this note was printed — absorbed back into the parent structure without fanfare. The note-issuing period was correspondingly brief, which keeps surviving examples thin on the ground.
Canadian Bank Note Company printed the series at Ottawa under contract, as they did for most chartered banks of the period. The S949 reference places this firmly in the chartered bank private issue classification rather than Dominion government currency.
