Obverse description Black intaglio on white paper. The central vignette carries the denomination '20 / Twenty Dollars' within an ornate panel flanked by a coat of arms above; the date 'MONTREAL, JAN. 2nd 1923' appears below the central panel. A portrait vignette of an elderly bearded gentleman occupies the left, and a second portrait vignette of a mustachioed gentleman is positioned at right. The bank title 'the Bank of Montreal' is engraved in bold script at the top centre, with the legend 'WILL PAY TO BEARER ON DEMAND' beneath it, and repeating denomination counters '20' and 'XX' fill the borders with a fine lathe-work guilloche underprint.
