Obverse description Black intaglio print on white paper with intricate guilloche underprint. At left, a large allegorical vignette of Neptune or a sea god figure with trident amid crashing waves; at right, a classical female figure seated with attendants. The central panel carries the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS within an ornate cartouche, flanked by the serial number 180778 and prefix C on both sides, with the place and date of issue inscribed below as Toronto, 2nd July, 1917. The heading THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE runs across the top, with Roman numerals XX in the lower corners.

Reverse description Printed entirely in orange-brown intaglio, the reverse is dominated by the central vignette of the Canadian Bank of Commerce armorial seal — a sailing ship within a circular legend — flanked by two standing allegorical figures, one holding a caduceus and one holding a sheaf of wheat, with cornucopiae and agricultural implements in the lower corners. The denomination numeral 20 appears in large format at both left and right, with the word TWENTY inscribed beneath the central seal.
