| Opis awersu | The obverse is executed in black intaglio on a pale lilac-grey underprint, with the bank title THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE arching across the top margin. A large central vignette carries a guilloché-bordered panel inscribed TWENTY DOLLARS and WILL PAY TO BEARER ON DEMAND, flanked by allegorical figures: a bearded Neptune or river god to the left holding a trident, and a seated female figure to the right, with a further group of mermaids or sea nymphs rendered in fine engraving in the lower right corner. The date TORONTO, 2ND JULY, 1917 appears below the central panel, accompanied by two manuscript facsimile signatures for the President and General Manager, and the denomination numeral XX is repeated in the lower corners. |

The bold denomination numeral 20 appears in the left and right fields, with the word TWENTY inscribed beneath the central arms.
