Obverse description Printed in green and black over a salmon-orange underprint, the obverse carries the legend DOMINION OF CANADA across the top, with THE BANK OF NOVA SCOTIA in bold gothic script arching below it. The central oval portrait vignette shows a woman in Victorian dress with a floral hair adornment, flanked by large intaglio numerals 20; to the left, a reclining allegorical male figure with a child, and to the right a standing allegorical female figure in fine engraving complete the lateral panels. The promise clause WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND appears below the central vignette, with date NOV. 1ST 1897 and place HALIFAX, N.S. inscribed beneath.
