The Bank of Nova Scotia was still a relatively young institution in 1896, having relocated its head office from Halifax to Toronto only a decade earlier. This note was produced by the American Bank Note Company in New York at a time when virtually every major Canadian chartered bank outsourced its printing to either ABNC or the British American Bank Note Company in Ottawa — the choice between them often came down to existing plate contracts rather than any meaningful difference in security or quality.
Canadian chartered bank notes of this period circulated as legitimate currency under the Bank Act, redeemable on demand. The 1890 Bank Act had capped individual note denominations and tightened redemption requirements, which shaped exactly which denominations were economical to print and issue in volume.
