Obverse description The obverse is printed in black and gold on white cotton paper. At centre, an intaglio portrait of a bearded gentleman is framed between the denomination panels reading TWENTY and DOLLARS, with an ornate guilloche underprint in gold throughout. To the left, a pastoral vignette illustrates a farmer ploughing a field with horses before a rural landscape. The issuer's title BANK OF HAMILTON arcs across the top in bold letterpress, with the place and date of issue, promise-to-pay clause, and serial number arranged in the field below.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in brown and displays a large central vignette of a bull elk's head within a circular frame, surrounded by an elaborately engraved lathe-work border of repeating geometric and floral motifs. Octagonal panels at left and right each bear the numeral 20, and the bank's title BANK OF HAMILTON curves around the central medallion in a bold arc. The overall composition is densely patterned with fine-line guilloche work characteristic of late nineteenth-century security printing.
