Additional information

Andorra began issuing collector coinage in the early 1980s largely as a revenue mechanism — the principality has no central bank and manages monetary affairs through a co-princes arrangement split between the French Republic and the Bishop of Urgell. Joan Martí i Alanis held the episcopal co-princeship from 1971 until his death in 2009, and his name appears on Andorran issues throughout that period as the ecclesiastical authority under whose nominal sanction they were struck.

This issue was struck two years ahead of the Barcelona Games, which marked Spain's most prominent Olympic moment since the 1936 event was cancelled by the outbreak of civil war.
