Thomas De La Rue's relationship with the Banque Centrale de Tunisie stretched across multiple series from independence onward, and this 1983 note falls within a period when Tunisia was managing significant inflationary pressure — the dinar had been under strain through the late 1970s and early 1980s as the government ran persistent deficits partly tied to subsidized consumer goods. The 20-dinar denomination was the highest in circulation at the time of issue, which made De La Rue's security execution here more consequential than on lower values.
Watermark-only security was already considered minimal by 1983 international standards, but Tunisia had not yet adopted the thread-embedded designs that would come with later series.
