| Reverse description | Central design depicts two astronauts in full spacesuits standing and shaking hands, symbolising the historic Apollo-Soyuz rendezvous mission. To the left, a stylised docking of the American Apollo spacecraft (inscribed 'USA') and the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft is shown against a curved planetary or lunar surface element rendered in the lower field. | Additional information |
Issued the same year NASA and the Russian Space Agency were finalizing early plans for what would become the International Space Station, this Gambian commemorative belongs to a prolific wave of silver issues produced by small nations with no direct connection to the subject matter. The Gambia ran an extensive commemorative program through the early 1990s, contracting designs and production to foreign minting houses targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation.
Few of these pieces ever entered The Gambia at all.
