The National Bank of Vietnam — the southern Republic's central bank, established in 1954 following partition — commissioned American security printers for several of its early issues rather than European firms, a deliberate alignment with its principal foreign backer. The Security Banknote Company of Philadelphia handled a handful of South Vietnamese notes in this period before the series was later taken over by other contractors.
The question mark against SBNC's dates in the standard references reflects genuinely incomplete documentation, not a cataloging oversight — wartime destruction of records and the chaotic circumstances of 1975 left significant gaps in the printing histories of several RVN issues.
