| Additional information |
The Santa Maria issue belongs to a sprawling series of commemoratives the Turks and Caicos Islands produced around the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first Atlantic crossing. The islands had no particular connection to Columbus's 1492 voyage — the landfall debate has historically centered on San Salvador and other Bahamian candidates — making this, like most Caribbean quincentenary coinage of the period, a revenue exercise rather than a historical claim.
