The Turks and Caicos Islands adopted the crown as a collectors' denomination in the 1970s, a revenue strategy common among British Overseas Territories with no meaningful domestic coin circulation. The 20-crown denomination exists purely for the commemorative market. This particular piece honors Nina, one of Columbus's three vessels on the 1492 voyage — timed to the approaching quincentenary in 1992, which generated an enormous volume of commemorative issues across dozens of issuing authorities worldwide.
