Issued the year Mountbatten was assassinated — though in fact he was killed in August 1979, making this a memorial strike rather than a tribute to a living figure. The IRA bomb that destroyed his fishing boat off Mullaghmore, County Sligo, killed him alongside his fourteen-year-old grandson and two others. The Turks and Caicos Islands were among several British dependencies that issued commemorative coinage marking his death, a pattern typical of Crown agents managing coin programs for smaller territories with no independent mint infrastructure.
