Additional information

Issued for the 50th anniversary of the Normandy landings, this coin commemorates Eisenhower's role as Supreme Allied Commander for Operation Overlord — the position he almost didn't hold. As late as December 1943, George Marshall was widely expected to receive the command, with Roosevelt himself having promised it informally. Eisenhower's appointment came only after Marshall's allies at the War Department convinced Roosevelt that the Army Chief of Staff was too valuable to send to Europe.

The Turks and Caicos Islands issued numerous .999 silver crowns through the 1990s aimed squarely at the collector market — this piece never circulated.
