The Turks and Caicos Islands used the crown — denominated in multiples tied loosely to the US dollar — almost exclusively for commemorative issues rather than genuine circulation. By 1998, the series had become a vehicle for wildlife themes aimed squarely at collector markets, with bottlenose dolphin subjects appearing across multiple Commonwealth territories simultaneously as part of coordinated bullion-adjacent programs.
KM#217 is one of several dolphin-themed crowns struck for the islands in this period, making individual issues easy to conflate in dealer inventories.
