Obverse description Laureate and bearded right-facing effigy of Emperor Francis Joseph I, his laurel wreath tied with a ribbon at the nape of the neck, rendered in high relief with finely detailed facial features characteristic of Anton Scharff's engraving style. The truncation of the bust is unadorned. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait, reading FRANC·IOS·I·D·G·IMP·AVSTR·REX BOH·GAL·ILL·ETC·ET AP·REX HVNG·, abbreviated titles identifying the emperor as ruler of Austria, Bohemia, Galicia, Illyria, and Apostolic King of Hungary. The entire design is contained within a beaded inner border.

Reverse description The Imperial Austrian double-headed eagle displayed at centre, each head surmounted by an archducal crown, the two heads united beneath a larger Imperial crown above. The eagle's breast bears the quartered Habsburg arms on an ornate shield. The wings are spread wide with detailed feather work, and the talons clutch a sword and orb. The denomination XX CORONÆ appears in the upper field flanking the crowns, with the Roman numeral date (varying by year) to the right, and the Arabic numeral denomination 20 COR. divided across the lower field. The year of issue in Arabic numerals appears in the exergue below the eagle's tail feathers. A beaded border frames the entire composition.
