Costa Rica's 1970 coinage program produced several large silver pieces explicitly for the collector market, not for circulation — the Venus series being among the most ambitious. The 20 Colones denomination was largely symbolic at that size and weight, as the domestic economy was already running on far smaller fractional coinage for everyday transactions.
KM#193 is occasionally encountered with uneven surface texture near the fields, a known artifact of the high-purity .999 silver blanks used, which are softer and more susceptible to contact marks during the striking process than standard .925 alloy.
