The Banco Central de Costa Rica relied on the American Bank Note Company for much of its mid-century production, a relationship that stretched across decades and multiple series. By 1983 that relationship was nearing its end — ABNC filed for bankruptcy in 1990 after losing most of its government contracts through the 1980s, and Costa Rica was among the clients that eventually moved on.
The Z series prefix marks a late-run replacement or continuation batch, issued as the country was managing currency pressure from regional economic instability that hit Central America hard in the early 1980s.
