Obverse description Black intaglio print on yellow and orange guilloche underprint, with red serial numbers. Central vignette presents the façade of the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica in San José, executed in fine line engraving. Denomination numeral "20" and bank title appear in ornate letterpress surround with signature lines for Presidente and Administrador.

Reverse description Printed entirely in blue intaglio. A classical Liberty head in profile facing right occupies a central oval vignette, wreathed in laurel and set within an elaborate guilloche surround. Large denomination numerals "20" appear in ornate lathe-work cartouches at left and right, with Roman numeral "XX" counters flanking the central vignette.
