Jamaica decimalized its currency on September 8, 1969, replacing the colonial pound system with the Jamaican dollar. The 20-cent piece was among the first coins struck for the new decimal series, issued under the Bank of Jamaica in the immediate post-independence period following the country's break from British Caribbean Federation arrangements. The "Wide Legend" designation distinguishes this from a later die variant with tighter spacing — a distinction that matters primarily to specialists working the series.
