Canada's 20-cent piece was a short-lived miscalculation. The denomination was chosen to align with the decimal dollar being introduced in the Province of Canada, but it created immediate confusion with the American quarter, close enough in size to circulate interchangeably yet worth five cents less. Merchants and the public rejected it almost immediately, and the denomination was abandoned after this single year of issue.
The entire mintage of 730,392 pieces was struck at the Royal Mint in London — Canadian branch mints did not yet exist. When the 25-cent piece replaced it in 1870, many 20-cent coins were redeemed and melted.
