The "ribbon upwards" designation distinguishes this issue from the earlier 1967–1985 series, where the ribbon on the reverse flower spray curves downward. Singapore's Monetary Authority quietly modified the design in 1985 without public announcement — a running change that has made die-variety attribution a minor but persistent collector puzzle, since many examples entered circulation indistinguishably mixed with the older type.
