Alderney's 2004 pattern coinage was produced as part of a broader proposal to equip the Channel Islands with a unified decimal small-change series compatible with ongoing eurozone discussions. The project never advanced to circulation, leaving these Nordic Gold pieces as production samples rather than issued currency. Nordic Gold — the same alloy used in Swedish 10-kronor coins and EU euro cents — was selected precisely because its electromagnetic signature is machine-readable and counterfeit-resistant, a prerequisite for any modern vending infrastructure.
