The 1909 "mule" designation refers to a die marriage that paired mismatched obverse and reverse dies not originally intended for the same denomination — a production error originating at the Poissy or Paris mint during a period when French Indochina's coinage was being actively revised. These were not caught before entering circulation, which is precisely why survivors attract the attention they do. The KM#13 attribution covers the mule variety specifically, distinguishing it from the standard 20 cent issue of the same period.
