Additional information

Mswati III ascended the Swazi throne in April 1986 at age 18, following the death of his father Sobhuza II and a turbulent regency period during which Queen Regent Ntombi held power amid factional court struggles. This coin entered circulation within months of his coronation, making it among the earliest numismatic acknowledgments of his reign — a reign that would become the longest of any living monarch for a stretch of the early 21st century. The first portrait was replaced as Mswati aged, giving this issue a distinct biographical specificity that later dates in the series lack.
