20 Cents English Legend - SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa's decimal coinage was introduced on 14 February 1961 — "Decimal Day" — replacing the pound system with the rand and cent. This English-legend variety emerged from the requirement to produce parallel issues in both English and Afrikaans, a political compromise baked into the bilingual structure of the apartheid-era state. Coins were struck with alternating language obverses and distributed without preference, meaning the two types circulated together freely. The series ran until 1969, when the English-legend coins were quietly discontinued in favor of the Afrikaans-only format.
