Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch colonial administrator and founder of Cape Town, rendered in fine relief with long flowing hair and period costume featuring an embroidered collar. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the upper right rim, with the date appearing vertically along the lower right field. The engraver's initials T.S. appear incuse near the truncation at lower left.

Reverse description A large, naturalistically rendered King Protea (Protea cynaroides), the national flower of South Africa, occupies the right and centre of the field, depicted in bloom with characteristic broad petals and prominent floral head, accompanied by flanking foliate sprigs. The large numeral 20 dominates the left portion of the field as the denomination indicator. The engraver's initials T.S. appear in the lower right field near the flower stem.
