South Africa's decimalization on 14 February 1961 introduced Afrikaans-legend coinage as the default, a deliberate assertion of Afrikaner political dominance under the National Party. English-legend versions were produced for circulation alongside them, but this 1965 nickel pattern suggests the mint was still testing specifications or legend configurations four years into the decimal system — likely in connection with ongoing discussions about coin standardization across denominations.
